Surface Water Identification and Training Course (SWITC)

Staff from Natural Resource Consultants (Jennifer Burdette), Sage Ecological Services (Nikki Duprey), and The Swamp School (Greg Price) will lead a 4.5-day training course on the most recent version (Version 4.11, September 1, 2010) of the North Carolina methodology for identifying intermittent and perennial streams and their origins, taking place June 8–12, 2026 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

This course is organized by and delivered through the North Carolina Association of Environmental Professionals (NCAEP). It combines classroom lecture and field-based instruction focused on the standard methodology used statewide and throughout the Southeast by the NC Division of Water Resources (DWR), as well as many local governments, for identifying intermittent and perennial streams and their origins.

Instruction will be conducted in and around Raleigh, North Carolina, with fieldwork conducted across three Level IV ecoregions: the Northern Outer Piedmont, Triassic Basin, and Rolling Coastal Plain, representing a range of stream and landscape conditions.

The classroom portion will be held at Biltmore Hills Park in the large meeting room, 2615 Fitzgerald Dr, Raleigh, NC 27610 (35.746106, -78.628234). Participants will be responsible for transportation to and from field sites using their own vehicles. The curriculum is coordinated with DWR and mirrors the course taught by DWR instructors.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Training that may be used with delegated or designated local governments. The registration fee is $815 for NCAEP members and $840 for non-members. Registration must be received by NCAEP no later than May 25.
