AZAPE January Monthly Meeting in Phoenix

Topic: Risks related to climate change and reclamation in the Southwest

Implementing strategies to promote biological diversity is often a reclamation goal on projects. Using predictions of climate change the presentation will focus on the steps toward developing a climate resilient reclamation plan. The first presentation will focus on steps to build resilience and the second presentation is a summary of how reclamation efforts create climate mitigation opportunities. Projects of the built environment cause environmental and social risk through ecological disturbance, increased temperatures, and increased stormwater runoff. Through the examples of several roadway and floodplain projects, we can see how landscape architects transform the disturbances of development into opportunities for native ecology, stormwater management, and public health.

Speakers:

Leslie Watson is an environmental planner who has supported efforts for complex NEPA projects such as the Cragin Watershed Protection Project (Coconino National Forests). She has over 25 years managing NEPA projects focused on natural resources in the intermountain west. Leslie is specifically focused on how to adapt reclamation plans to reduce climate change risks.

Alex Stoicof is a Landscape Designer at Wheat Design Group who focuses on green infrastructure and erosion control. Her background is in landscape architecture, geography, and geographic information systems, and has worked on climate change assessments at local and global scales. Alex is specifically interested in the intersection between design and science, and how landscape architecture can enable the built environment to reduce climate change risk.

Cost: $20 for members, $25 for non-members, $10 for students in an environmental field of study (includes dinner).
