The Coast Guard and Preventing Environmental Pollution

The United States Coast Guard plays a crucial role in protecting the marine environment as part of its broader mission under the Department of Homeland Security. Among its various responsibilities, the Coast Guard serves as the lead federal agency in combating spills in U.S. coastal waters and shorelines, ensuring swift and effective environmental mitigation.
Marine Environmental Protection Program
Through its Marine Environmental Response Policy office, the Coast Guard oversees initiatives aimed at preventing and responding to environmental threats. This includes planning and operations to address oil spills and hazardous substance discharges, as well as enforcing regulations to deter illegal dumping, prevent invasive species, and protect aquatic ecosystems.
Marine Science Technicians
Dedicated personnel, known as Marine Science Technicians (MSTs), are central to the Coast Guard's environmental protection mission. These specialists inspect vessels and facilities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, respond to pollution incidents, and enforce domestic laws and international treaties. Positioned at Coast Guard Sectors and Marine Safety Units nationwide, MSTs ensure a timely response to environmental threats.
National Strike Force
The National Strike Force is a specialized team of over 200 highly trained Coast Guard members. Equipped with advanced tools, these teams respond to significant environmental disasters, such as the BP oil spill in 2010, which released 205.8 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Organized into regional strike teams—for the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts—the NSF provides rapid and effective responses to protect both public safety and the environment.
Collaborative Efforts
The Coast Guard does not act alone in its environmental mission. It collaborates with federal and state agencies and civilian stakeholders to handle complex pollution incidents. These partnerships strengthen its ability to mitigate environmental damage and safeguard marine ecosystems through coordinated efforts.
Each year, the Coast Guard responds to thousands of pollution incidents across U.S. waters. Its proactive regulatory efforts and timely responses are critical to shielding our marine environment from avoidable harm.
